Day 205: Ambush at the Cemetery

The bird on the day is in this wolves belly! Per my norm, I headed out shortly after sunrise. Today’s birding and photographing location was the Forest Hill Cemetery in Duluth. This location has some nice ponds and lots of forest immediately adjacent to the cemetery. Thus, birds and mammals like the park like location. Upon arriving at Forest Hill, I heard lots of geese and mallards squawking.  Within a few moments I discovered the reason for their racket, a coyote had ambushed a duckling and eaten it for a quick breakfast!

Eventually I found that this cemetery was not a great place for other creatures to hang out. Both an eastern kingbird and a house wren were ambushing some food for breakfast!

Day 204: Huckleberry Heron!

Even though the light was not perfect (middle of day with reflective light off the water), I could not resist photographing Huckleberry Heron! After all, it’s not every day that one sees and takes a picture of a great blue heron rafting down the river! Yes, this heron was slowly drifting down the St. Louis River just before it joins the Duluth Harbor off Lake Superior.

Day 203: Waxwings on the Rocks!

As I noted yesterday, it is fun to have sunrise at a slightly later hour. It’s now possible to head outside to enjoy the early morning activity without having to get up before 5 am! I had noticed yesterday that the Cedar Waxwings often come down onto the rocks in the early morning … thus today’s photos.

I also enjoyed photographing an old laker (the Alpena) as she entered the Duluth harbor at sunrise.
