Amazingly we had some sun yesterday morning in the Seattle area. This meant it was time to take birding hikes at my two favorite locations near my son’s home:
- Marymoor Park
- Yellow Lake / Klahanie Park
Hope everyone is surviving the runup to Christmas. Here is some natural color!

Hi, new to your blog. What type of camera are you using for your photos? I’m looking at purchasing a beginner’s camera for birding and I’m overwhelmed with the choices. Thanks for any advice,
Liz Brennan/Cincinnati, OH
Do NOT go overboard and purchase a DSLR camera with huge telephoto lens. One can quickly spend between 7 and 8k dollars. It is MUCH more important to learn bird habitat including what they like to eat. Volunteering at a local bird / wildlife refuge is an excellent way to learn from the naturalists.

With respect to cameras, I started with a super zoom bridge camera, in my case a prior model of the Canon SX70 which now costs about $600. However, a camera with a bit less reach (optical zoom telephoto) that I really like is the Sony RX10-iv with 25x zoom and a bit larger sensor. This camera will run a bit over $1600. Neither the Canon or this Sony allow for the changing of lenses. Here is a link to the Sony from Amazon … https://a.co/d/cv287xv (As a fyi, I receive zero compensation for any link on this site, or payment from manufacturers. My opinions are my own, and not “bought” or “paid for”)

Thanks Rich! Your pictures are a fantastic gift. Merry Christmas 🌟 & Happy New Year to you & yours.
just love these!!!!!! happy holidays!
Am a new addition to your blog. Seattle is one of our favorite places to visit. I represented a company on Bainbridge Island for many years and our son lives there. We were just there a few weeks ago. Always birding. Bainbridge and the Olympic Peninsula has some great birding (a 40 minute ferry ride from downtown Seattle) I was on the hunt for a good picture of the Chestnut-backed Chickadee. Got it.
