Time Out from Owling to Visit Duluth’s Largest Birdfeeder!

The following words are from my own blog post a few year’s back, but the images were taken late yesterday afternoon at Duluth’s largest bird feeder, Canal Park:

This bird feeder is now open and stocked. Now that the harbor is frozen, but the canal is still open due to current and the passage of freighters, huge flocks of Goldeneyes are present. The ducks know that the canal walls are lined with zebra mussels, which means food! Around 3pm in the afternoon on any sunny day the sun streams down the canal giving excellent photography conditions. However, dress warmly because you are often very exposed to the North wind.

  1. Richard, I love your blog, especially the owl photos. I live in Virginia, so I enjoy seeing your Northern birds. Is there a reliable place to see a boreal owl?

    1. There are no reliable spots for Boreal Owls, but this winter is definitely an Irruption. The best way to see this little owl is to cruise backroads particularly between Duluth and Two Harbors on very cold, sunny days. Sometimes the Boreal Owls will be more out in the open trying to warm up in the sun. By northern Minnesota standards a cold day would be below zero ferenheit
