Sunrise Over Homer, Alaska

The sun is starting to kiss the mountain tops directly across from my AirBnB looking out over Kachemak Bay near Homer, Alaska. This is a grand place, and after an explore of Homer shortly after I arrived yesterday evening, I am thrilled I chose to not stay in town (only a short drive by car). I took this image before sunrise this morning … my view.

While I did not really have time to bird yesterday during my 12+ hours of travel, while leaving Anchorage I found these Red-Necked Grebes right off the Seward Highway at Potters Marsh. It’s been eight years since I’ve seen Red-Necked Grebes!

Today I explore Gull Islands and Kachemak Bay by boat!

North to Alaska (Birding)

North to Alaska! I am on my way to a small one room cabin in the woods near the end of the road on the Kenai Peninsula. This evening I am overnighting at my daughter’s house in the Twin Cities. I am super excited for many reasons:

  1. Official celebration that I am not about to die (i.e. heart problems)
  2. While I love my wife, this is a journey I take on my own
  3. I am not anxious

Birds are not really important. Life is important. Listen / Watch the North to Alaska Song by Johnny Horton (link for email subscribers). My family has asked me to Strava my hikes with pics provided by my cell phone. I will obey. Here is my Strava profile and walks.
