Ruby is a Red Fox that lives in the northern forest. In this beginning reader’s children’s picture book, Ruby hears a “knock, knock, knock” and goes to investigate. During Ruby’s wanderings, she makes new friends with many animals and birds, and ultimately learns what makes the “knock, knock, knock” sound.

Hi! My name is Ruby. I am a red fox. I live (and my cousins) almost everywhere in North America, but I was born in the Northland near Lake Superior. As a kit (name for a young fox), I normally live in a den (small cave or protected area). My parents take care of me and do all the hunting for our food. Here are two photographs of me and one of my siblings … when I am very young and then a “teenager”.
If you would like to learn more about my entire life cycle, browse to either of these two web sites:
- New Hampshire Public TV (nice overview)
- Wikipedia (very detailed)
As I grow into an adult, I learn how to hunt … eating small animals, but also insects and plants. Here are two videos of me … one as a youngster and then grown up.
It’s hard living outside. In the Northland temperatures occasionally fall to -40F in the winter. My fur coat gets really thick to keep me warm. I can even sleep outside, on the snow. In the sun I am quite warm.
Browse to see some pictures of me hunting in the snow. I look kind of evil! However on hot days I am happy to live next to Lake Superior!
Although this is not my own video (the book’s photographer), everyone wonders … “What does the fox say?!”
I hope you enjoyed my book. The forest is a beautiful place in which I enjoy living.
