50 Degrees Warmer! Happy Owl.

One week ago today I blogged and included a photograph of the male Great Horned Owl all frost encrusted at -20F. My local owls have definitely nested, and now it is a waiting game till late March or early April. This morning at 9 am it was 30F (50 degrees warmer). The male Great Horned Owl may normally be found in a white pine 10 yards from the nesting tree with a clear view of his mate. He looks much more comfortable given the warmer weather. I know I like the warm sun.

Winter birding will now get much more difficult. Other owls will start to nest within the next few weeks (Barred, Great Gray, Long-Eared, etc). Bald Eagles are starting to migrate in decent numbers along the North Shore of Lake Superior. Pine and Evening Grosbeaks will move north as well within a short period of time. I actually sat outside on our deck for an hour reading yesterday afternoon for the first time since early November. The afternoon temperature reached 40F!

The Morning Hoot!

I was up at 5 am this morning because I wanted to hear the “morning hoot”. Little did I know that the Great Horned Owls which have nested near my northern Minnesota home for the past three years would visit my own yard / white pine trees and mate in easy view.
.
The owl couple then made lots of flights in the area, till settling down in the forest 1/2 mile from my house. All this movement attracted my local crows, who are not pleased to have the owls back in the neighborhood raising a family for a third straight year. Enjoy the owls and crows hooting and cawing 30 minutes before sunrise.
.
The photos shown in the video / audio recording are of the actual two owls which are singing / hooting (just not taken this morning).

The Afternoon Hunt!

I hear the squirrels are numerous, big and tasty! Photo taken from the comfort of my living room with the fireplace warming the house. This Barred Owl stayed all day and was only 20 feet away from me at the time I snapped this photograph. When the temperature is -24F outside each morning, this is the way to go birding! (glass of wine in hand … Chardonnay of course).
