Day 205: Ambush at the Cemetery

The bird on the day is in this wolves belly! Per my norm, I headed out shortly after sunrise. Today’s birding and photographing location was the Forest Hill Cemetery in Duluth. This location has some nice ponds and lots of forest immediately adjacent to the cemetery. Thus, birds and mammals like the park like location. Upon arriving at Forest Hill, I heard lots of geese and mallards squawking.  Within a few moments I discovered the reason for their racket, a coyote had ambushed a duckling and eaten it for a quick breakfast!

Eventually I found that this cemetery was not a great place for other creatures to hang out. Both an eastern kingbird and a house wren were ambushing some food for breakfast!

Day 192: Observe Your Surroundings While Birding!

Early this morning I set out to photograph either … A) a kingfisher, or B) a hummingbird.

While the kingfisher family was a no show, my travels pointed out the importance of looking around oneself when focusing upon a particular kind of photograph. If I had ignored my surroundings I would never have seen … within 30 yards or less of me … a beaver, an 8 point buck, or a dragonfly on a flower!

I ultimately got some neat hummingbird photos, but they were almost an afterthought to the day!

Day 186: Morning in the Mist!

Sometimes the best time to go birding is in light rain! I followed my own advice and spent some time at a small pond early this morning. As it was not stormy, the animals were busy feeding and moving around. Enjoy visiting my northern Minnesota pond, including the video included below of a beaver building its mound / nest.
