Northland Bog Sightings

Over the past 10 days I have spent some time driving my favorite bag roads … remote forest roads through wilderness bogs. My favorite road, bar none, is Toomey Williams Forest Road in Pine Island State Forest west of Big Falls. This road is a narrow (just barely one lane wide) through beautiful forest bog and forest. Sax-Zim Bog is strictly minor leagues when compared against Toomey Williams. However, unlike Sax-Zim, most Pine Island roads are not plowed free of snow in the winter. I have a page which reviews my favorite NE Minnesota birding locations, including Pine Island.

Closer to home I love an area I affectionally named the South Bog. Just like in Sax-Zim Bog, you will find the occasional farm on slightly higher. I found this Sandhill Crane on a hay bale, which was a new one for me. While I have seen many birds and animals hunting from the tops of hay bales, I had never seen a Sandhill Crane on a huge mound of hay. The crane was calming picking grubs, etc. out of the hay. After about 10 minutes, it moved on to another hay mound and repeated the process. Cool to watch.

Finally, on the way home from the South Bog, I swung by Forest Hill Cemetery. The two ponds are now a food factory … generating bugs that hatch and fly (prey for Cedar Waxwings), and small swimming fish and other yummies (prey for Green Heron)

Killing Time During the Rains

While apparently most of the USA is suffering a HUGE heatwave, the exact opposite is true here near the Minnesota border with Canada. I am at my Northstar Lake cabin, and the temperature has difficulty exceeding 60F, and when the intermittent showers come, it gets even cooler … like right now.

This morning I spent four hours in one of my favorite birding areas, Pine Island State Forest including Toomey Williams Road. More beautiful bog habitat one will never see. Sax-Zim Bog pales by comparison. Although I saw lots of birds this morning, very few were willing to pose for my camera with the exception of this Red-Tailed Hawk.

I keep hoping to get out on Northstar Lake and spend time with various Common Loon families, but did I mention the showers?? Here is one pic from two afternoons ago.

The clouds are supposed to clear somewhat (50% overnight). As Ovation Aurora is already quite high, hopefully this forecast will ring true and I will spend some time Northern Lights watching tonight.

Hiding from Mosquitoes

Oh my … mosquitos. I had to set up the water system yesterday at our cabin 100 miles NW of Duluth. Remember the Off commercial where the person sticks his arm in a container of millions of mosquitoes? I was the before picture. The water level is also super high … highest ever. We are the first lake in the Hudson Bay Watershed. If you are anywhere downstream from us in northern Minnesota or Canada … watch out!
.
Thus, I decided I would get away this morning to a favorite wilderness spot of mine in the Pine Island State Forest near Big Falls, Minnesota (left the cabin at 4:50 am). If I thought the mosquitoes were bad at NorthStar Lake, in the bog area near Toomey-Williams Forest Road the swarm was out in full force. Getting out of the car to bird was a non starter. Even opening the window for a few seconds to take a photograph was dumb. I did see a Black Bear which I believe was running to get away from the nasty bugs.
.
Anyhow a few images from today … first an early morning Thunder Boomer threatened.

I was surprised this American Kestrel let me get so close and did not spook.
